Dear AHS Indian Family, Alvarado High School applied for the Optional Flexible Year Program (OFYP) and was approved by the Texas Education Agency. You may have heard this program referred to as "Marvelous Mondays" by your students. I would like to take a few moments of your time to explain how the program works and the benefits your student will receive through its use. Certainly you are aware that every student in Texas must pass all TAKS exit exams in order to receive a high school diploma. The Texas Education Agency has allowed for the OFYP as a means to help students achieve this goal. With the OFYP option, teachers are able to work with significantly smaller numbers of students on "Marvelous Mondays". Furthering their ability to pinpoint just where each student is struggling in the testing process. We are excited about the opportunity this option gives us to ensure all students are successful on their TAKS tests. Explanation of how it works: • The State requires students attend 180 days of school. • Through the OFYP, students that pass all of their TAKS/Benchmark tests in a given year may be exempted by the school for up to 10 school days. • If a student does not pass all TAKS/Benchmark tests, they are required by law to attend all 180 days of school. • Therefore, your student is not attending more school, only the required amount. • The benefit is that we are able to give much more individualized attention so that your student has the tools to be successful on the TAKS and earn his/her diploma. As I have stated, this is a great opportunity for students, parents and the school to ensure students are equipped to pass the TAKS tests. However, this program will be of little or no benefit if we do not have the support of parents. I am confident that you want your child to earn a high school diploma, just as we do. Therefore, we are asking that you ensure your student attends "Marvelous Mondays". Your child's Pow Wow teacher will be contacting you in the near future. He/She will be happy to answer any questions you may have about this exciting new opportunity for us to work together to help your student be successful on the TAKS tests. Quizás ya haya oído de este programa referido como los Lunes Maravillosos por su hijo. Me gustaría tomar unos momentos de su tiempo para explicar como funciona el programa y los beneficios que su hijo va a recibir a través de su uso. Seguro que usted sabe que cada estudiante en Texas debe pasar todas las pruebas de salida de TAKS para poder recibirse con un diploma de la Preparatoria. La Agencia de Educación de Texas ha permitido que el Programa de OFYP sea una manera para que nuestros estudiantes logren esta meta. Con la opción de OFYP, los maestros van a poder trabajar con grupos más pequeños en los Lunes Maravillosos. Esto les permite la habilidad de ver exactamente donde están teniendo problemas los estudiantes en el proceso de exámenes.
