With elections right around the corner, the Alvarado High School debate club is giving the community a chance to get involved as it will be sponsoring Alvarado Decision ’08: Democracy In Action at 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 6 in the high school auditorium.
There will be a performance by the high school choir, the JROTC will be presenting colors and AHS debate students will present pro-presidential candidate speeches.
“This forum is very exciting,” Alvarado ISD Superintendent Chester Juroska said. “Every citizen, especially voters should be knowledgeable about political and governmental issues and how various candidates feel about them.”
“This will be an opportunity to become informed. Voting blindly or merely in the name of a political party does not serve our country. Good citizenship requires a person to be able to logically defend his or her position.”
The night will also feature Republican Rob Orr, Libertarian Tom Stewart and Democrat Chet Edwards, who will be answering questions submitted by the audience.
Alvarado High School librarian Susan Mauldin will serve as moderator and, in the lobby, Spanish teacher Lester Reed will be conducting a mock vote complete with voting booths and numbered ballots.
Voter Registrars will be on hand to register people to vote in time for the presidential election. Party representatives for the Democrats, Republicans and Libertarians will be on hand to answer questions and hand out literature.
